Capture devices are now essential for game streaming and live commentary. I have used a variety of capture devices in the past, but the new "GC515" from AVerMedia is a very unique product that combines recording, streaming, and stand functions.

This time, AVerMedia provided us with the "GC515," so we will review the appeal of this device, including our impressions of actually using it.

If you're interested in the actual usage experience, we have a video introducing it, so please check it out! [GC515 Review] A multi-functional capture device that can be completed with just one device! https://youtu.be/Natds8qYGFQ

Appearance and design: Convenient integrated stand

One of the GC515's greatest features is its integrated stand design.

Conventional capture devices come as a "small box" and are often used in combination with a separate stand or dock, but this product is designed to be used as a stand from the start.

I actually tried propping up the Nintendo Switch 2, and it was very stable. There was a recess for the included cable, so it didn't wobble. Preparing for recording or streaming was as easy as "standing it up and connecting it," so I was able to set up the setup very smoothly.

The accessories include three cables and an instruction manual.

Regarding the cable

・Type-C to Type-A cable

・HDMI cable

・Type-C cable

That's all.

The minimum necessary cables are provided, but if you want to record or stream while charging your game console, you will need a separate charging cable.

Recording and Pass-Through Capabilities

The GC515 supports recording and pass-through at up to 4K 30fps.

When I actually played a game, the image quality was stable and there was no breakdown even in scenes with a lot of movement. It also supports 4K 60fps video input, in which case the recording resolution is limited to Full HD 60fps.

It doesn't support HDR, so it may not be enough for those looking for professional visual beauty. However, I felt that it offered sufficient performance for streaming and video creation.

Recording function without a PC

Simply insert a microSD card into the device and press the record button to begin recording. I usually use OBS for streaming and recording, but I can now do it all with just one button press, without having to start up my PC and adjust settings.

It can be used without hesitation in situations where you need to record immediately, making it ideal for events or on the go. It also supports 1TB of microSD, allowing for long recording times.

Connectivity and Expansion

The GC515 is unusually equipped for a capture device as it has USB hub and power supply functions.

This means that you can connect the Switch to a PC and output video to a monitor, and also connect peripherals such as a microphone via USB. What's more, it can even charge the Switch itself, which is a major advantage when connected to a PC.

When I actually set up a streaming environment, I found that reducing the number of cables made my desk area much neater. The fact that the GC515 is all you need for video capture and docking is a major advantage for people who stream and record on a daily basis.

Software Compatible

It supports a wide range of software, including AVerMedia's original "Streaming Center" as well as OBS Studio, which is popular among streamers.

I also did a test recording using OBS, and there was no noticeable delay in either the video or audio (confirmed by recording and streaming).

Price and value for money

The GC515 will be released in September 2024 and will cost around 20,000 yen.

If you were to purchase the capture device, stand, and USB hub and power supply separately, it would cost around 30,000 yen. By combining all of these into one device and keeping the price this low, I felt it was extremely cost-effective.

Try it out for yourself!

- Easy to set up: Simply stand the Switch up and press the button to start recording.

- Tidy up your desk: Peripheral devices can be organized, reducing cables and increasing your workspace.

- Reliable operability: Intuitive operation reduces recording errors.

In particular, the fact that it lowers the barrier to starting recording and streaming is a major attraction for people who stream on a daily basis.

Overall Review

After actually using it, I felt that the GC515 is especially recommended for those who want to simplify their recording and streaming preparations.

"People who want to record without using a PC"

"Gamers who mainly play on Switch and portable PCs"

"People who are thinking of using it on the go or at events"

I think it's the best option for things like this.

The GC515 combines recording and streaming with the convenience of a multi-functional stand, making it a very attractive device, especially in terms of price, so if you're interested, be sure to check it out!
